Terms Agreed – Celtic beat off Southampton interest to close in on versatile £600k left sided defender

Liam Scales will remain at Shamrock Rovers to play in the Dublin side’s Europa Conference League play-off round against Flora Tallinn starting on Thursday before heading across the Irish Sea to sign for Celtic in the £600,000 transfer deal we told you about on 2 August.

Over the weekend the Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley confirmed that his star performer will remain at the club for the European showdown but admitted that Scales would be departing shortly afterwards, with Celtic Park his likely destination. Ange Postecoglou’s somewhat surprising assurances that he sees Scales as being first team ready appears to have been enough to see off a late attempt from Southampton to scupper the Celtic deal.

Scales can play as a left sided central defender, a left back or a left wing back and that seems to be an area of the side that Celtic’s squad needs strengthened.

Yesterday Scales was the star performer for Shamrock Rovers in their 1-0 win over Drogheda United  and afterwards Bradley gave this update on the Celtic bound 23 year old.

“I’m not sure where Liam’s end is at but our stuff is tied up. I’d imagine with the window closing at the end of the month, it’s getting there,” the Shamrock Rovers manager told the media, as reported by Scottish Sun. “If not after Tallinn, it will definitely be soon. We did things at our end. Liam has a decision to make and I’m pretty sure where his mind is. Liam will definitely travel and be with us on Thursday. We’re nearly getting there but he’ll definitely be there Thursday. He’ll definitely be involved in the first leg and hopefully second.

“It’s been really good. We spoke at length when the interest and bids came in. We’ve all spoken openly from the start. There’s his thinking and our thinking; both clubs have dealt with it really well.”He’s been brilliant, been dealing with this background for a while and you wouldn’t think it looking at him. He’s played every minute.”

On this comment above , the Irish window closes at the end of August apparently.

From 2 August…
