“That was a kick in the teeth,” Turnbull’s Rapid frustration

David Turnbull and Kyogo certainly impressed during their appearance in the second half line-up against Rapid Vienna on Saturday evening. The two picked up where they’d left off at the start of last season, combining well to provide an assist for each other and the Scotland International midfielder is in no doubt about the very obvious quality that his Celtic teammate has.

Turnbull reckons that Kyogo is one step ahead of everyone else and playing behind him makes his own job much more enjoyable and when you get an understanding of just how good a footballer the Japanese talisman is then that leads to goals.

“I played with him all of last season and I love playing alongside him,” Turnbull told Football Scotland. “We had a good partnership then and against Rapid we linked up for two of the goals. He’s a joy to play with.

“It’s great to know that he will make the runs in behind and he can find me as well. I think just his movement and his runs and behind are brilliant.

“Sometimes he’s even one step ahead I feel, and you can’t get the ball through to him. If you play it early though he’s always onside and ready to be there.”

After a strong start to last season both players suffered significant hamstring injuries in December – Turnbull in the League Cup Final win over Hibs just before Christmas and Kyogo on Boxing Day up at McDiarmid Park in Perth. Those injuries kept both players out until the closing matches of the season and now the two Celtic players will be looking to resume normal service in the new season.

“Yeah, I just try to contribute to the team, and if that’s scoring or creating goals or whatever, it’s just about doing my best for the team and if they come along then I’m happy with that,” Turnbull said.

If you look back, I think a few of my goals have been like that as well. I try to score all types of goals and whatever way they come I’m happy with them.”

Losing that last gasp goal that desired Celtic a victory in Vienna was as frustrating for the players as it was for the support. Pre-season match or not, losing a goal with the last touch of the game to deny you a win is annoying.

Yet Turnbull reckons that game was a good test against a decent team who moved the ball well. Great preparation for the real stuff which starts at the end of the month when Aberdeen are the flag day visitors to Celtic Park.

“You’ll always be disappointed losing a goal with the very last touch of the game, so that was a kick in the teeth, but we’re obviously satisfied to get 45 minutes in our legs, up against a good team,” Turnbull stated.

“They moved the ball well and it was a good test for us. We’re feeling good. It’s been a good pre-season camp over here. The facilities are great and we’ve been working hard every day.

“We obviously had the first game the other night and then Rapid, and both have gone well, so we’re looking forward to the games coming up.”
