‘The Battle of the Highlands’ – A possible league-winning goal from Anthony Ralston

That was pure magic!

How unbelievably enjoyable was that? I can’t remember the last time I saw Celtic get a last-gasp winner like that that felt this good. 97 minutes. Pinch me I must be dreaming! What a leap that was from Tony bhoy at the back post to snatch watch could possibly be a league-winning goal come the end of this season.

That goal isn’t just vital for us tonight; it will have deflated the new Ibrox club, who thought they had some more breathing space heading into their games at Pittodrie at the end of the month and Celtic Park come January. No such luck lads, we’re still hot on the trail I’m afraid. Four points it remains at and how did we need that win tonight more than ever.

As predicted, we weren’t at our best tonight. That is totally redundant with three points in the bag and a happy trip back down the road for everyone tonight. What a bounce that was at the end there. If it wasn’t for the game being on they poxy PPV channels, we might have been able to basque in watching Kris Boyd squirm like the little worm he is.

Alas, it was certainly not vintage. The goal we scored was excellent first of all. Liam Scales put in a fantastic ball across the box for Liel Abada to do what he does best and score goals. We dominated the play yet again but without penetrating the County goal all that much. Granted we have no recognised centre-forward at present, even so, the lack of cutting edge is starting to really hamper us.

Scales let himself down for the goal badly. He should never have let Baldwin get the better of him in that scenario, more so that he is a big lad and has the height to challenge most in a one-on-one defensive dual. The clamour will be for Taylor to be reinstated automatically but I’m not all that convinced by Greg either. Sure, he’s as steady as they come but that’s ok when your playing for Kilmarnock. For me he still hasn’t shown enough going forward on a consistent basis.

The Starfelt sending off was bemusing to be truthful. I don’t know why he was booked when he had obviously been hurt with a reckless elbow to the face, so the big Swede was well within his rights to complain about it to Alan Muir. As Gerry McCulloch said on Celtic TV, ‘how dare Carl Starfelt question the referee’. All a lot of nonsense if you ask me. Even that challenge from Starfelt was light for a bookable offence. Seen them just given as a freekick with no punishment for the defending player umpteen times in football. Utter tosh from Muir.

On another note, I think Turnbull should be taken off freekicks and Juranovic on them. His shot at it was a far better attempt than all of Turnbull’s put together. He always wants freekicks and rarely registers a shot on target from them. He was ok tonight, but again I felt he took too many touches on the ball which showed at that chance he had towards the end to slip in Juranovic and lost the ball.

On to the main man. Anthony Ralston has been nothing short of astounding since he was first given an opportunity in this team. From his weaving run and finish versus Hearts at Tyncastle at the beginning of the season, to his last minute header tonight which keeps our title challenge beating as loud as ever. What a player, and what character he must have to get to this stage from where he was at last season. Bravo Tony bhoy, bravo!

Another three points in the bag and piling on the agony yet again. Get in Celtic.
COYBIG!

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. I am convinced and have commented previously that Ralston can slot in as a defensive midfielder or wing back to free McGregor to play further forward and give Turnbull a seat on the bench until the injuries clear up.
    Ralston a true Celt.
    Hail hail.
