The Telegraph’s Crazy Fraser Forster Valuation

The Telegraph are today reporting that Premier League relegation favourites, Southampton could demand a fee in the region of £20m for Fraser Forster.

Forster was the star of the show on Sunday’s League Cup Final on Sunday at Hampden. Christopher Jullien scored the winner but it was the English goalkeeper that gained the plaudits with some incredible stops, including a penalty save from Alfredo Morelos.

After the game, Neil Lennon said that the club would be exploring a potential deal for the England Internationalist when his loan deal expires in the summer. A potential stumbling block could be the wages of the Englishman, which have been quoted at £70k, though Lennon is willing to ask the question.

“Again, it’s affordability. I’ll talk to the player, but first we have to make the call to Southampton. Is it beyond us? I don’t know.

“Would I love to do it? Of course, but we have to be realistic at times and we can’t go overboard either. We have to be prudent, but we have him right now and it’s fantastic because he’s definitely made us better.

“His movement, his footwork was fantastic. He just wasn’t getting beaten. He makes blocks, he just closes down the angles. He doesn’t give himself up too early. He doesn’t second guess the striker – he reads it brilliantly.

“Because of his frame, his wingspan, he can get to balls other goalkeepers can’t get to and it gives the back four a huge shot in the arm to have someone like that in goal.”

Southampton currently sit in the relegation zone in the Premier League and are amongst the favourites to drop out of the league.

It comes down to a compromise for all parties, Southampton will want the huge wage off their bill for a player that they do not want, Celtic would need to pay a fee (whether to player or the Saints) and the player would have to take a pay-cut.

That isn’t to say that it cannot happen, the player seems keen and Celtic will be spurred on by Forster’s incredible performances since making his return to Glasgow the only issue that remains is Southampton’s fate.

Southampton currently have Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy in contention for their number one spot and youngster Harry Lewis acting as back-up to the pair. Forster is surplus to requirements and a move to Celtic would suit all parties.

It could take a lot of work and compromise from all parties, but should Celtic re-sign Fraser Forster it would be a massive statement of intent.
