In the lead up to tonight’s game against Raith Rovers, David Turnbull spoke yesterday about the overall disappointment after yet another away defeat, this time at Livingston.
“We know Sunday wasn’t good enough, but the games are coming thick and fast,” Turnbull stated at yesterday Media Conference ahead of the League Cup quarter final tie at Celtic Park this evening.
“It’s just about putting that right with the game tomorrow and we are all looking forward to it. We had a meeting during the week after it [the 1-0 loss to Livingston]and we were just discussing everything.
“Where we felt we went wrong, how to put things right and put our style of play to good use – what we have been doing. It’s just about doing that in every game and we have went over that, and hopefully it starts clicking for us now.”
If he plays against Raith Rovers tonight it will be the 50th appearance in Celtic colours for the man they call ‘The Wizard from Wishaw’. After so much transfer activity during the summer, where we lost a large group of players who proved so successful during our run to 9 in a row and the quadruple treble, Turnbull is now one of our more experienced players.
“It’s funny, because last year everybody around me in the team had played more games,” Turnbull said. “Most of the players had experienced more at Celtic. But going into this season it’s changed a lot. There have been a lot of new signings.
“I think they’ve settled well, but it’s still been about helping them. I think they all know what it means to play for a club like this. It’s just about getting everyone believing and trying to do big things.”
It’s strange to think of David Turnbull as one of the more experienced members of our squad as it seems like no time ago when he broke on to the scene under Neil Lennon, who many felt delayed his emergence into the first team reckoning for too long. With so much change in the summer, and so many new faces in our squad, David has now become a player others will look to, both on and off the pitch.
On his day he can be an outstanding attacking presence, the hat trick earlier in the season against St Mirren being one of those occasions, but we need these performances on a more regular basis. If David can find a higher level of consistency he will go far in the game but at the moment he needs to start proving he can do it against all opposition, not just the St Mirren’s of the world.
