There’s A Romanticism About This Week In The Celtic Calendar

Recent Celtic history has brought amazing success on this date – 7 November.

This week is always a special time in the club’s calendar with Celtic being formed on 6 November 1887. Part of the fairy tale is that the match surrounding this date brings out the best in the team.

In 2012, the Celtic Graves Society organised a mass at the club’s birthplace, St Mary’s Church in the Calton. Technically, the club was formed in the church hall, which was situated in an alley called Irish Wynd, but it’s about as close as you can get to the foundations. That night was special as Celtic legends, management and boardroom staff celebrated the birth of a fantastic institution, alongside officials from Barcelona.

A day later, Celtic went and made history by beating Barcelona 2-1. There was a fantastic full stadium display set up by the Green Brigade before the match, the atmosphere was the finest heard in the stadium since the days of the Jungle, and a depleted Celtic team beat the best club side in the world. The fact that a rookie youth team graduate scored the winning goal only adds to the mystique of the story.

Fast forward seven years and 7 November was again producing special moments. This time, Celtic travelled to Rome to play a competitive fixture in the Italian capital for the first time. Celtic had sneaked a victory at home against Lazio a few weeks earlier, and had the opportunity to qualify from the group with victory. An army of 9000 Celtic fans travelled to Italy. They would witness an iconic moment as the Bhoys scored a last gasp winner to earn the club’s first victory on Italian soil.

And how they celebrated:

We need more magic on this special week tomorrow. Nothing less than a win will suffice.
