“They go for the throat,” Tam McManus on Celtic’s Desire to Win

Celtic’s desire to win football matches has come into sharp focus of late as our winning streak keeps rolling along. Despite repeated attempts by the opposition, officials, and VAR technology to halt us in our tracks, we have blasted our way to another League Cup trophy and are looking good to retain the title. There also could be the added bonus on a Scottish Cup this time out, after missing out last season.

For sure, Ange Postecoglou is well on his way to delivering another successful campaign with pieces of silverware at the end of it. After delivering in his debut year in Scottish football, the Greek-Aussie hasn’t rested on his laurels and that much is self-evident when you look at the team he has assembled and how it’s evolved too.

Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis have come and gone at Celtic Park since the summer of 2021, and it looks like we have adequately replaced and may, perhaps, even have improved on their respective talents. Undoubtedly, we have guaranteed that if we do sell Alistair Johnston and Hyeongyu Oh, that we will receive considerably more cash when they do depart.

The new additions have certainly brought out the competitive edge again in this Hoops team and since they dropped points at Ibrox at the beginning of the New Year, we have looked hungry for more success and silverware following that near miss that day in Govan. We have remained unbeaten in every domestic competition since and it shows no signs whatsoever of slowing up.

Just this past weekend, we came from a goal behind in the first half of the game against St Mirren in Paisley, to strike FIVE goals back into their net without reply. Even though the Saints went down to the men, we faced a team that refused to leave their own six-yard box essentially and it could have been nightmarish but for the sheer grit and desire to win of this Celtic team.

Ange brought on Liel Abada and it changed the game completely. The Israeli attacker was superb from the second that he stepped onto the pitch at the SIMSA Stadium and highlighted just how important our whole squad will be this year. The equalizing goal from Jota also laid bare the hunger within this crop of players to achieve more and more in the game.

Tam McManus was taking about this on PLZ Soccer with Peter Martin this week, and revealed that at this current juncture, that is the difference between Celtic and their closest rivals, theRangers. Speaking on the football talk show, he said of Postecoglou’s Celtic: “That’s the difference – they go for the throat.” It’s a central motif of this team and club more generally, since the big man arrived at Parkhead, and it has already delivered three trophies so far with more in the offing.

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
