Thomas Robert makes move to Belgium after Celtic and Burnley trials

Thomas Robert has joined Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron in a deal until 2023 with the option of a further year. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder had spent time on trial at Celtic and Burnley but no deals were forthcoming for the Airdrie starlet and now he has sealed his next move to Belgium’s second tier.

Robert was recently invited by Sean Dyche’s Burnley as the Premier League outfit weighed up whether or not to offer him a deal. The winger had just a year remaining on his deal and Airdrie would have been tempted to shift him along given the performances of the young attacking midfielder.

The starlet spent two weeks on loan at Celtic earlier and despite positive discussions with Nicky Hammond, no deal was sanctioned as there was no new management structure is in place after Neil Lennon’s departure. Robert has been impressive for Airdrie since joining from Montpellier last summer. Robert, the son of ex-Newcastle star Laurent Robert, bizarrely chose to join the League 1 side despite interest from across Europe. Perhaps it was on the weight of his father’s name that he managed to get trials with Celtic and Burnley but from the limited footage available of him, he appears to be a mercurial talent that could mean a spell of sustained game time in the right conditions could see his career take off.
