Tony Watt shows his support for Green Brigade’s Rod Stewart banner

Rod Stewart raised some eyebrows recently when he congratulated Boris Johnson for his electoral victory. This did not go down well with a large portion of the Hoops fan base with the Green Brigade even bringing a banner that told the musician and long term Celtic fan that he was not welcome anymore in explicit terms.

The banner has raised some controversy as well. Many Celtic fans believe that it was out of place in a football game, especially when it was aimed at someone who has been a loyal fan of the club for years. Interesting, Stewart had criticised the club’s ultras earlier for their use pyrotechnics which had constantly led to the club being fined. BBC pundit Tom McManus even went as far as to claim that the Green Brigade were just looking for attention.

Former Celtic star, Tony Watt, was quick to shut down any such suggestions though. Watt tweeted out:

One does have to understand the history of Celtic Football Club if they are to get the sentiment behind the banner. And while many pointed out that Rod Stewart has the right to have his own opinion, so do the Green Brigade. And they expressed it in the form of a banner.
