“Toughest Challenge,” Tommy McIntyre on Celtic B v Morton cup-tie, Saturday at 3pm

Tommy McIntyre’s Celtic B team will face their toughest test of the season on Saturday when host Morton in the SPFL Trust Trophy at the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie – a very decent wee ground where you can this season watch both the Celtic B team and Fran Alonso’s Celtic FC Women play their home games.

Having defeated Annan Athletic 2-0 in the previous round the Celtic B team were rewarded by a home draw against Greenock Morton and McIntyre yesterday looked forward to the challenge this cup-tie presents from the Championship side in the 3pm kick-off tomorrow afternoon.

Speaking to the media yesterday the Celtic B manager, whose side has been enjoying their first season in the Lowland League, reckons that the jump in quality is something that his young Hoops side should relish.

“I’m not being disrespectful to other teams, and we have faced some tough teams in the Lowland League, but this one is a different thing altogether.

“Morton are up there in the Championship, they have brought in four new players over the transfer window – but that’s why we’re here.

“It’s to take our players out of the comfort zone, because ultimately we’ll be judged by players that go from the Academy to the first team. If we can give them that grounding and real tough challenge, and it does kind of make them feel a wee bit uneasy, then what a challenge that is for them.

“We prepare for every game the same way irrespective of the opposition, we try to do our homework and I would like to think it’s methodical in how we prepare.

“In that respect, we do have that idea that we are going into the game in a good frame of mind. The players have been playing really well, players have been on international duty, so it’s a good game to take, it’s a good game for us, it’s a tough challenge it will be a difficult game for us.

“And we know that. It’s going to be a really, really tough game but the challenge is there for the players and it’s up to them to make their name.”
