Transfer Latest – Celtic midfielder set to sign for Shaun Maloney’s Wigan Athletic

Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw is close to joining English League One side Wigan Athletic, according to a report in local newspaper Wigan Today.

Shaw has failed to break through at Celtic and looks set to join up with Wigan Manager Shaun Maloney in Greater Manchester.

The Englishman joined Celtic in the summer of 2021 with the deal announced alongside the signing of Osaze Urhoghide, with both players joining from English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Shaw joined Celtic for a reported fee of £345k with the deal done prior to the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. The 22-year-old has featured just twice in a Celtic shirt, both coming in Ange’s first season at the club.

The former Sheffield Wednesday player was subsequently sent out on loan to Motherwell in January of his first season in Glasgow, where he played eight times and failed to register a goal contribution.

At the beginning of last season Shaw was sent out on loan to English League One side Morecambe where the player enjoyed a much more fruitful spell.

Shaw scored twice and register three assists in 39 games but ultimately failed to keep his side in the division with Morecambe finishing 22nd, two points adrift of safety.

Now it looks like his time at Celtic is over, the truth is it never really begun.
