Transfer Report – Obert price set, injured Breum sits out season opener

Celtic now know the fee required to secure the signing of Cagliari defender Adam Obert…

Obert, naturally a central defender, was primarily deployed as a left-back throughout most of last season in Serie A. Reports this week linked Celtic with a move for the 22-year-old Slovakian international, who has earned 11 caps for his country.

Celtic and Belgian side Royal Antwerp have submitted offers

According to Italian outlet Calcio Casteddu, both Celtic and Belgian side Royal Antwerp have submitted offers around €3.5 million for Obert, but Cagliari are holding out for a fee in the €6 to €7 million range. Despite the sizeable difference in valuations, the report suggests that surprise twists in the negotiations remain a possibility.

Jahmai joined Celtic on loan from Manchester City

Brendan Rodgers made it clear in his presser last Friday that with Jahmai Simpson-Pusey joining on loan from Manchester City, Celtic have no plans to pursue another centre-back during this transfer window. Given Obert’s experience at left-back last season, he may be seen as a potential backup for Kieran Tierney, especially with Hayato Inamura not making the squad on flag day and suggestions he might go out on loan.

Meanwhile, Go Ahead Eagles will begin their Eredivisie campaign this evening against Fortuna Sittard without Jakob Breum, who continues to be linked with a move to the Scottish champions. Earlier this summer, Celtic saw a £1.5 million offer for the Danish winger turned down by Go Ahead Eagles, who have made it clear they will not consider letting him go for under £5 million.

Breum appears to have picked up an Injury

Breum featured in Go Ahead Eagles 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven last weekend in the Johan Cruyff Shield but will not be included in the squad traveling to face Fortuna tonight.

Dutch publication De Stentor has clarified that Breum’s absence is not connected to transfer talks but is due to an injury sustained during the match against PSV. Whether Celtic return to the negotiating table for Breum remains to be seen, but we are now 28 days on since Nicolas Kuhn’s departure, and ridiculously, he still has not been replaced.
