Turnbull’s move to Celtic is OFF

MOTHERWELL have this afternoon announced that David Turnbull’s proposed move to Celtic is now officially OFF. Taking to social media the For Park side have confirmed that the the transfer to Celtic is not now happening.

“David Turnbull is to remain a Motherwell player, with a proposed move to Celtic FC no longer taking place,” they tweeted, linking to an official statement on the club’s website that reads as follows:

“An agreement was reached with the Glasgow club on 12 June, subject to the player agreeing personal terms, which he did, and undergoing a medical.

“During that medical process, an issue was identified that will require David to have immediate preventative surgery and subsequent rehabilitation.

“Celtic were still keen to sign the player despite this matter arising. But having presented revised transfer terms to Motherwell, the clubs could not reach an agreement.

“David will now remain at Fir Park and will shortly have an operation which will rule him out of any football for an extended period, the exact length to be determined following surgery.

“We will give David all the support he needs during this process. We wish him the best with his procedure and rehabilitation, and look forward to watching him play in claret and amber again in the near future,” the Motherwell statement said on their website.

We reported this morning on Celtic’s willingness to proceed with the deal despite the injury that appears to have only have been discovered existed when the player underwent a detailed scan in Manchester.

“There has been a glitch with the medical as you know,” Neil Lennon confirmed yesterday. “David might need have to go through some short-term pain for long-term progress.

“We still want him here – me and the club as a whole.

“It’s still ongoing, there’s still discussions going on between the clubs. But we’re still positive that we want him here.

“It’s between the two clubs to try to get some deal sorted out. The situation is through no fault of David’s. It was just something that was unforeseen.

“We are still backing the lad and we want him to be part of the club, regardless of the injury.

“Discussions are ongoing with Motherwell and hopefully we can get a positive resolution,” The Celtic manager said to the press in Austria yesterday, as reported by Scottish Sun.

Celtic apparently proposed a loan deal for the season, believing that it will be quite some time before Turnbull is ready to play, and then conclude the transfer at the end of the season, providing the rehab is successful. That has not been accepted by Motherwell and they have as a result pulled the plug on the move.
