There were high hopes for Marian Shved when he joined the club. Supporters saw an impressive highlight reel upon his signature and were even more excited when his stunning goal in the Champions League qualifiers against Nomme Kalju replicated the footage of his goals scored in Ukraine.
Since then, the winger has made just two more appearances and has struggled to make the squad. Neil Lennon explained that this was due to the difficiulties that the Ukranian international has had in terms of adapting to Glasgow life, and that as a result he wasn’t at the same level as others in the team.
Shved joined Celtic for circa £2m last January, before being loaned back to Karpaty Lviv. He rejoined the club this summer and last featured for a short cameo in the Scottish Cup against Clyde last month. It’s a move that, thus far, hasn’t gone to plan and Ukrainian scout/football agent, Yaroslav Zvarych, believes Shved made a mistake moving to Glasgow.
Zvarych told the Daily Record: “I’m not the player’s agent, but I recommended to Celtic they sign Marian. Everything they learned about him came from me. But perhaps he made the wrong choice by choosing the Scottish league. I don’t think he properly researched the strength of the league and the competition for places in the squad. And I believe the language difficulties he’s experienced won’t have helped him adapt. It’s probably a number of small complications for him that have contributed to the bigger picture there in Scotland.”
