Vasilis Barkas nears new club as Celtic flop speaks to English Championship side

Former Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is currently holding talks with Swansea City. The English Championship side are considering signing the player on a free transfer following his departure from Celtic earlier this summer.

According to SportTime, the Welsh club are interested in the 29-year-old, who spent last season on loan with FC Utrecht in the Dutch league.

Celtic had tried to sell Barkas in two summer windows but have struggled to find any suitable clubs willing to pay a fee for the Greek Internationalist. It resulted in the loan deal to the Netherlands, where the player impressed but his salary and the buy-out fee were too great for the Dutch club.

Michael Nicholson and Celtic decided to cut ties with the player earlier this summer as they opted against exercising the option for a fourth year on his deal.

Barkas has just two appearances last season and found himself down the pecking order at Celtic. The arrival of Hart as well as Scott Bain being given a new deal suggests that the prospect of ever breaking back into the first team is slim. The former £4.5m man will be keen to get his career back on track by sealing a move away from Celtic, it would be in everyone’s best interests if this could be achieved on a permanent basis with some of the outlay returning to Paradise.
