Daizen Maeda thought that he had fired Celtic into the lead with a great finish. The Japanese winger latched onto a loose ball in the penalty area to volley beyond Sinclair in the Saints nets.
However, Carey was lying on the deck as the Celtic players celebrated. His teammates argued with the referee, Don Robertson, who was told to consult the monitor by Alan Muir.

The VAR official at Clydesdale House called his colleague across to consider what went on in the box before the ball hit the net. It appeared from the replays that Carey had lost Maeda, and attempted to run out, he had collided with Auston Trusty. The decision is fairly bizarre because if the officials had believed it had been a deliberate attempt from Trusty then he might’ve been flashed a yellow card.
Celtic have been on top in the opening half an hour in Perth and Brendan will hope that his side can take their chances.
