On this day in 1999, Celtic travelled to St James’ Park to compete in Peter Beardsley’s Testimonial match.
Celtic dominated the game, taking the lead through a Peacock own goal in the third minute, before Lubomir Moravcik showed the English crowd his quality with a stunning strike on 23 minutes.
Debutant Mark Burchill, who had just signed a 4.5 year contract put Celtic 3-0 ahead in the closing stages, before Peter Beardsley was given a token gesture of a penalty in the final seconds.

5,000 Celtic fans travelled for the game and were delighted to hear that Beardsley insisted that he wanted the Hoops to provide the opposition and nobody else.
Ironically, the Celtic fans were chanting “Shearer for Celtic,” throughout the match and were hit by a reply of “You’ve got no money,” from the 31,000 or so Newcastle United fans.
