St Patrick’s Day 1991, Celtic Park, the Scottish Cup and a Glasgow derby; all the ingredients for a special day in Paradise. Four red cards and two first half goals added to the occasion and with Celtic on the cusp of the next round, the whole of Celtic Park burst into a raucous rendition of the Irish national anthem.
Sung in English, as it was originally written and indeed as it was sang by James Connolly, the Irish diaspora in Scotland showed full appreciation of Celtic’s Irish roots. The scene can be enjoyed in the below video.
