Video: Darren O’Dea’s Finest Moment In The Hoops, 12 Years Ago Today

It is quite remarkable to think that 12 years have passed since Celtic’s 2-0 Co-Operative Insurance Cup Final victory over Rangers. The Hoops were on the back of winning three league titles in a row at the time and Gordon Strachan’s winning machine kept going with another piece of silverware in March.

Celtic’s route to the Final had been somewhat interesting and included an 11-10 penalties victory over Dundee United in the Semi-Final.

A fraught Glasgow Derby saw the match conclude with the score level at 0-0. However, Darren O’Dea lit up the contest with a wonderful glanced header in extra-time, before Aiden McGeady made sure of the win with a fine penalty kick. The Irish international had won the spot-kick himself with a magnificent burst of pace which left Kirk Broadfoot in his wake.

The game was the highlight of what turned out to be a disappointing season as the title went to the other side of Glasgow, when Celtic squandered a late opportunity to make it four in a row. This day will live long in the memory though, particularly for the thunderous atmosphere emanating from the Celtic end.
