Video – Dortmund Away: Celtic Fans In Westfalenstadion (October 1992)

Celtic were paired with German giants, Borussia Dortmund, in the UEFA Cup second round. The Bhoys had already faced German opposition in the form of Cologne, who they just squeezed passed in a thriller at Paradise.

Celtic were a demoralised team at this time, whereas Dortmund were building a strong side that would eventually lift the Champions League trophy in 1997. The Germans beat Celtic 1-0 on home soil, but the real story was the phenomenal travelling supporters, who made themselves heard throughout the match.

Fortunately, a Dortmund fan had his video recorder with him to capture some rare fan footage from the era. Enjoy all the old songs and relive the memories here:

The Hoops welcomed Dortmund to Paradise in the second leg on 3 November. Creaney gave Celtic an early lead, but two second half goals for Dortmund handed them victory. The German club became the first team to beat Celtic in both legs of a European tie, excluding Rapid Vienna which is not legitimate considering Celtic originally won the second leg.

Dortmund went on to reach the UEFA Cup final that season, where they were beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Juventus (the final was played over 2 legs in the competition at the time).
