Video – Man Utd legend Alex Ferguson on how his mentor Jock Stein helped Aberdeen defeat Real Madrid in Gothenburg

Sir Alex Ferguson’s mentor was the legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein. Despite playing for Rangers, the former Manchester Utd manager talks about his appreciation for the great Celtic time of the same era he played in Scottish football, and recalls his conversations with the late, great Jock Stein about that Celtic side.

Stein he recalls never once took any personal credit for the achievements, talking instead about the various wonderful attributes of players like Jimmy Johnstone, Bobby Murdoch, Bertie Auld and Stevie Chalmers.

Ferguson also tells the story of the support and advice that he received from Jock Stein ahead while managing Aberdeen ahead of the 1983 Cup Winners Cup Final win over the mighty Real Madrid. With Stein’s help Ferguson was able to outfox Real Madrid and in doing so lull them into a false sense of security.

In the second video Alex Ferguson and also Graeme Souness discuss the terrible night when Jock Stein died while managing his country.
