Video – ‘Oven Ready’ Former Celt Aiden McGeady signs for Charlton Athletic

Aiden McGeady today completed a Deadline Day move to Charlton Athletic. The former Celtic Star was a free agent after being released from his contract at Sunderland.

Earlier this week Niall J floated the idea that Neil Lennon – who always had a stormy relationship with McGeady – could have done worse that make a short term move for the winger to provide cover until the end of the season.

With Mikey Johnston suffering another long term injury at McDiarmid Park in midweek that perhaps was not such a crazy suggestion after all, but it’s not going to happen as McGeady is heading to the Valley rather than a return trip to Paradise.

Reaction to the move from Charlton fans seems very positive.

“Excellent signing. Loved watching him play at Celtic- he maybe hasn’t achieved all that he could given his talent.. let’s hope the next season or two he fulfils his excellent potential! Wahooooooo,” wrote Joe Simpson.

Charlton Manager Lee Bowyer told the club’s website: “Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad. Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing.

“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player. Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Charlton’s Director of Football Steve Gallen added: “I’m pleased. He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years watching him play for Ireland and Celtic in particular. We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times. We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden.”

McGeady will train with his new teammates today and will be available for selection for Charlton’s game against Barnsley at The Valley tomorrow.
