“We’re not focused on the Champions League or winning the league, we’re focused on the next three points,” Alonso

Yesterday morning we took part in the mixed media Conference Celtic held with Fran Alonso and Chloe Clark ahead of the penultimate SWPL match of the campaign against Forfar Farmington tomorrow afternoon at K-Park. Alonso’s side is away to Motherwell a week on Sunday , 6 June and two wins against these sides from the bottom of the league guarantees Champions League football next season. A couple of big wins and a result going Celtic’s way next Sunday when Glasgow City play theRangers could even mean a title win for the Ghirls in Green.

“It’s very important we focus on trying to get the three points,” Alonso said ahead of the Forfar game. “It’s our last home game and we’ll be able to have some fans, so I want a good performance and to get the three points so they feel proud.

“We’re not focused on the Champions League or winning the league, we’re focused on the next three points like we have done all season,” he insisted.

“We’re on amazing form and in the best mental and physical condition we can be for this stage of the season, but we do not underestimate the opponent. If we control what we can control we’ll probably have a good game and, hopefully, get the three points.”

Celtic’s recent big win away to Forfar provides encouragement ahead of tomorrow’s encounter but the Spaniard is cautious of counting chickens at this stage, reminding us that Forfar were leading 2-0 at K-Park earlier in the season, only for Celtic to dramatically rescue a point with two injury time goals.

“Forfar and Glasgow City are the only teams to take points from us, so if we underestimate Forfar we’ll struggle,” he said. “If we had beaten Forfar on both occasions this season, it might be more difficult for me to get the message across that we need to focus on the three points. The danger would be we think we’ve already won.

“We created so many chances in that game but we didn’t put them away. We have to focus on getting the three points because it won’t be an easy game.”
