Robert Snodgrass praises ‘elite coach’ Maresca amidst Celtic links

Robert Snodgrass has praised Celtic managerial candidate Enzo Maresca, claiming that the 41-year-old has the ability to become the new manager at Parkhead as the Italian is an elite coach. The pair worked together at West Ham when Maresca was No.2 to Manuel Pellegrini and the Scot told Go Radio Football Show that Maresca will have learned a lot from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, meaning he will be in high demand in a few years.

“Enzo is a great candidate for the job and he’ll have learned a lot working under Pep for a year and getting little ideas from him.

“What you see with Pep and his style of play – that’s what Enzo looked up to. When he was at West Ham there were three or four different managers he’d study and try and work like in and out of possession.

“I thought he was top class. An elite level coach. You could see he had all the credentials to be a to gaffer but the game is changing now and they want to be called coaches rather than managers because they want to coach players to become better.

“Someone has to come in and give Christies, Edouards, Griffiths their confidence back. But I believe he’ll have other clubs trying to get him because he’s that good and I worked with him for 18 months before David Moyes came in and West Ham wanted to keep him.”

Maresca is currently on the books of Manchester City’s U23s, working with the English super club. He won trophies with Juve and Seville as well as coaching with The Hammers, Seville and Ascoli. He is highly rated by Pep but may be looking to become a manager in his own right.

Celtic may be looking for more of an established name to come into the job but a name like Maresca would certainly capture the imagination of the support, wondering how a Maresca side would shape up. The support are looking for a big name to bring instant success to the club after Celtic’s poor performances cost 10IAR.

  1. Bit of a difference between the standard of player at Man. City and ours so its alright saying what he would be able to do but could he do it with what we have… that’s a big question mark for me.
