Why a Treble this season would beat Invincible year for Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has hit back at all those naysayers who claim that domestic dominance is easy and boring…

It comes after his skipper, Callum McGregor, also pointed out to the media and critics the incredible levels of consistency shown over the years and how this is very difficult to maintain and remain peerless in Scottish football.

The midfielder’s manager has echoed this sentiment too in an interview with Celtic TV, and even claimed that this particular campaign could well be his best yet as Parkhead boss. It’s quite the statement to give, considering the wonderful success he achieved during his first tenure as the head coach of the club, going onto win a Treble in his first season in Scotland, going a full term unbeaten too as an Invincible.

Needless to say, it was big shoes to fill when Rodgers returned for a second spell at Celtic Park after the previous success, but the Carnlough bhoy insisted this one could be his best yet. “If I look over both spells, for me, it’s been really satisfying,” h said. “Why? Because I’ve had two different teams now. Obviously Callum, James, Bainy has been involved, Tony… apart from that, there’s not been too many that have been over the course of my two spells.”

“So taking two different teams to these points, it’s so hard work”

“So taking two different teams to these points, it’s so hard work. I think people who don’t recognise it, they don’t understand it or don’t have the knowledge of what it takes to actually win… we see it throughout the world, teams that spend money and then are deemed to have the best squads – but they don’t always win. What we have here is a culture that is built around winning and then what that takes, and obviously, the biggest word of that, which is a real challenge, is consistency.”

“I’ll become even more satisfied and probably my BEST season here if we can finish off with these two trophies”

Rodgers continued: “So you can have quality players, but if they’re not consistent and the mentality and their work, and their ideas and how they play and how they train, then it’s a challenge. But for me, it’s been so satisfying this season and I’ll become even more satisfied and probably my BEST season here if we can finish off with these two trophies.

So, I’ve been delighted with all the work we’ve put in and how we recovered from setbacks, but it is not easy, I can guarantee you that. So much goes into it. It’s 24/7 at a club like this here, also the expectations, the pressures. So these players have dealt with that so, so well.”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
