Why was Celtic named in Jim White’s Taylor Transfer Story?

Jim White is certainly becoming the go to guy for the new PR team at Ibrox. Hot on the heels of the Talksport presenter countering Michael Stewart’s questioning of the recent Hagi signing, comes what appears another plant on behalf of the new club.

After Michael Stewart questioned where the money was coming from for the Hagi deal, particularly how it looked a poor show as offices staff remained furloughed, teammates had deferred their wages due to the coronavirus, and of course the impact the impact on the clubs stretched finances. Good old Jim White jumped in.

The SkySports man advised the deal was a structured repayment over three years and therefore affordable. Yes twisted logic indeed but there you have it.

Trying to make the deal as reasonable sounding to the staff making sacrifices, and allay the fears of some of the more coherent fans – who can see the gaping hole in the clubs finances – was the name of the game.

This time Jim White has dropped the name of Lyle Taylor into conversation as a target for Celtic, while at the same time his counterparts at the Daily Mail have a link to the journeyman striker signing upon contract expiry with ‘the’ Rangers, yet no mention in that publication of a Celtic link at all. Strange one.

Even the Ibrox support are likely to question the signing of Lyle Taylor. Celtic fans simply wouldn’t have it at all. No disrespect intended, but Taylor has had more clubs than Frank McAvennie could fit in on long weekend in Ibiza and is as average a striker as you can come across.

He’s now 30 years old, is part of a Charlton Athletic side as good as relegated, and at present is refusing to work for them when football returns, in case he gets an injury and it impacts on a future transfer. Just the sort of guy you want in the trenches with you.

I’m not sure than mind-set would fit in at Celtic but if ‘the’ Rangers want to take that gamble be my guest. What won’t be happening is what Jim White and ‘the’ Rangers PR team want here. It won’t be – as will be attempted – reported as ‘Star striker chooses Ibrox over Celtic Park’ headline, and that’s what they are trying to do.

When you are shopping in the bargain basement and you want to make the product seem less end of line and more premium, what better way than to have the deal sold as beating your rivals to the punch?

The truth of that matter is when it comes to shopping, Celtic and ‘the’ Rangers are operating in very different markets and Celtic won’t be looking at a contract expiring ex-Falkirk striker who is just about to leave his 15th football club, while jumping ship when his team need him most.

That’s not a gamble Celtic have to take. The Ibrox club on the other hand?  Well free transfers and loan deals to replace the likes of Morelos and Barasic may be something they may get have to get used to this summer as they attempt to stay afloat.

One thing is for sure they won’t be beating Celtic to the punch when it comes to those they do bring in, however Jim White and pals try to paint it.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
