9 Vans Full Of Food And £17,870.26: Celtic Support’s Tremendous Generosity At Green Brigade Annual Foodbank Collection

As every reader of this website will be aware, Celtic were formed by a group of Catholic men for charitable purposes in November 1887. The club’s first circular was issued two months later and it stated the following:

The main objective of the club is to supply the East End conferences of the St. Vincent De Paul Society with funds for the maintenance of the “Dinner Tables” of our needy children in the Missions of St Mary’s, Sacred Heart, and St. Michael’s. Many cases of sheer poverty are left unaided through lack of means. It is therefore with this principle object that we have set afloat the “Celtic”, and we invite you as one of our ever-ready friends to assist in putting our new Park in proper working order for the coming football season.

Given the club’s history and wider cultural significance, traditions are extremely important to Celtic Football Club. The Green Brigade are one group of supporters who understand that fact as good as anybody. The group do much to keep our history alive, whether it’s reviving old songs, promoting inclusivity, or undertaking charitable work. The latter was to the fore this weekend, as the Green Brigade held their annual foodbank collection outside Celtic Park.

Quite incredibly, the collection fetched £17,870.26 and filled nine vans with food.

All this in the face of a despicable incident when the vans transporting items to the foodbank were issued parking fines. You can read more about that dismaying affair by clicking the link below:

Showing no sign of resting on their laurels, the Green Brigade are continuing the work of Brother Walfrid and the fellow founding fathers by holding a Christmas Toy Drive. The announcement was made on the North Curve Twitter page and will see the group collect toys and cash outside section 111 at Celtic Park, ahead of the Hoops’ home match against Motherwell. Details can be seen below:

Congratulations to the Green Brigade and wider Celtic support for not only continuing to keep the club’s traditions alive, but also for making such a significant impact on the lives of the less fortunate. Your generosity is unmatched.
