Alistair Johnston named in SPFL Team of the Week

Alistair Johnston has been included in the cinch Team of the Week following Sunday’s performance away to St Mirren. The no-nonsense Canadian defender has been like a rock since he joined the club in a £3.5 million deal back in the January transfer window and looks like being a real steal for Ange Postecoglou and his backroom staff.

The departure of World Cup Semi-finalist, Josip Juranovic was always going to be a tough ask; the 27-year-old was a real find from Legia Warsaw when he signed for the daylight robbery price of £2.5 million in the summer of 2021. We couldn’t have imagined how good a full-back we were getting in Jura and he served us well before he left for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, netting us a tidy profit into the bargain.

But it appears that lightening does strike twice with Ally Johnston now appearing every bit as good as the Croatian, with plenty of room for improvement too. He’s born-again hard this bhoy, and the passion and commitment he shows every week out there on the field in a Celtic shirt really is a beautiful thing to see as a football supporter.

This week he has been justly rewarded with his inclusion in the Team of the Week and it will be the first of many I’m sure. His overall play merited it on its own, as he harried and cajoled his fellow teammates into getting back into the game at the SIMSA Stadium in Paisley on Sunday afternoon. His goal was just the cherry on top on our way to a comfortable 5-1 victory.

Well done, Ally!

We hope it’s the first of many!

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
