An Opportunity To Change The Momentum

The next phase of Ange Postecoglou’s managership at Celtic sees the Hoops visit Hampden for the Premier Sports Cup Semi Final against St Johnstone. In many ways, this fixture provides an opportunity to take the first step towards changing the momentum back in Celtic’s favour.

Since the Bhoys’ all conquering Quadruple Treble, St Johnstone have been top dogs in Scotland with two trophy successes. Meanwhile, the most important piece of silverware headed to Ibrox last season. Ange has come in and began a considerable rebuild in very swift fashion. No more are supporters writing this season off, now we are looking to win trophies.

As ever, our priority is to win the league. The gap in the SPFL table is down to four points. However, recent form and upcoming fixtures arguably favour Celtic, particularly as the reigning champions are currently managerless.

7th November 2021; Dens Park, Dundee, Scotland: Scottish Premiership football, Dundee FC versus Celtic;

Psychology and momentum play a big role in Scottish Football and after a tough start, Ange has the chance to reach a cup final where either Hibs or theRangers would lay in wait. If he can deliver the trophy then Celtic’s one campaign without something to put in the cabinet will immediately be banished. The guard will have changed again and I have no doubt that the Hoops would gain confidence to push on in the title race.

If we are to set up a chance of silverware, to take the initiative in Scottish football, and to quench the thirst for renewed success, then we must get through Saturday’s test.

St Johnstone are extremely tricky customers in cup football. Their historic double last season proves that. But, as mentioned, this game is about more than the League Cup for Celtic. It could be symbolically significant, and any cup glory could give the players greater belief in Ange Postecoglou. It would make him a winner in Scotland.

As such, I expect the Bhoys to come out guns blazing.
