Ange Postecoglou – Focus is on next match, not on breaking records

Ange Postecoglou has always been steadfast in his belief that the old clichè in football about focusing on the next match is essential to our team. Since he stepped into the role as the Hoops boss back in June of 2021, he has never wavered in concentrating fully on what’s on the immediate horizon, as opposed to looking deep into the future.

It’s probably why we managed to overthrow our fierce rivals during his first year as manager, even though we had started at a major disadvantage in terms of time and needing a full rebuild of the squad too. That unequivocal attention to the detail and what is immediately on your schedule helped us get better bit by bit, game by game in what was a remarkable turnaround for the club’s fortunes.

Now, with a seemingly unassailable lead in the Scottish Premiership as we are twelve clear at the top of the league looking down on theRangers, many heads are turning to the possibility of breaking previous incumbents’ points records at the club. With Martin O’Neill and Brendan Rodgers the men to catch, with 103 and 106 points respectively, the supporters are hoping this can be achieved.

However, Postecoglou has reiterated the belief that what’s in his eyeline is all he and the team are caring about for now, even as the Bhoys have a handful of games to go in the campaign. Speaking at his media conference on Friday afternoon, the Celtic boss said: “I don’t think it’s about getting a bounce because I don’t think we needed one. We’ve been going well for quite a while so from our perspective it’s just continued focus on whatever the challenge may be every week.

“It was really positive for us last week in a really important game against our main rivals and closest to us in the table, so we were able to get the job done. The players have shown great character through this whole season to overcome whatever challenge there is, and now the focus is on the next game. We know that’s going to be another good challenge for us.”

When assessing the idea of breaking points and becoming history-makers, the ever circumspect football manager took a different view. “Looking beyond that (Kilmarnock game) has no purpose for whatever reason, whether that’s because we can see the finish line close or because there’s another competition,” he said.

“It all becomes irrelevant because we know if we’re not totally focused this weekend, we won’t be able to get the job done, and that’s been the key to our success so far and why we’ve been consistent for so long. Everyone has embraced the fact that our greatest challenge is the one that’s next and that’s Sunday.”

Although the supporters are itching for the club and this special team to break the record books and become legends in their own right, Ange knows the dangers of thinking eveything is sewn up. He’s been over the course many times before and will keep the players on their toes. That’s not to say though, that he and his players won’t want to reward the fans for their support throughout the season by finishing with a flourish.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
