Ange takes inspiration from The Tommy Burns Story

This week at Celtic Park the club has been putting on a brand new play celebrating one of the club’s greatest ever figures. Set in the Kerrydale Suite the play has been performed in front of sell-out crowds each night.

The Tommy Burns Story has been acclaimed by those who have attended as an excellent production with much laughter and many tears throughout the performance.

The play opened on Tuesday and there was a very special guest amongst the crowd which consisted of over 400 suppoters, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Speaking to the Celtic View podcast, the Hoops boss said: “It was a fantastic experience. I went with my wife and it’s a great production that the cast and the crew have done a fantastic job in honouring Tommy. I’m sure his family would be proud.

“To share it with 450 other Celts in the room was quite special and there was plenty of laughter, which was synonymous with Tommy, and plenty of tears. It was very emotional.

‘What comes through is what I’ve always believed myself as I’ve got older is, as much as Tommy’s achievements were unbelievable, it’s who he was as a man that stands out. That’s why people still remember him today and will remember him forever because of the person he was. And there’s a lesson there for everyone.’

“I know we are driven on achieving things and that’s great because that gives you focus and you want to be part of something special but it shouldn’t diminish the fact that you can be a good person doing all those things and in the end, that’s what people reflect on most.

“He was obviously an outstanding person. I was privileged to be in the room, privileged to be in on opening night and enjoyed it immensely, and I’m sure everyone else who gets to see it will do likewise.”

Many Celtic fans have recently been comparing our current manager Ange Postecoglou to Tommy Burns, which I’m sure from hearing the high esteem in which Ange holds Tommy will be a huge compliment to the Greek Aussie. Both believe in the same footballing philosophy where they not only want to win matches but want to win in style, playing the type of football that gets fans on their feet.

Like Tommy, Ange is also beginning to find his way into the hearts of the Celtic fans by the way he carries himself, representing Celtic impeccably while fiercely defending the club against its many naysayers.

It’s good to see our manager getting involved with events like this showing he takes a serious interest in the club as a whole not just with what is happening out on the pitch.

Hailing from Cushendall in the North of Ireland my formative years were spent watching Celtic during our barren spell through the 90's which meant I have appreciated our recent trophy-laden spell even more. Favourite matches home and away I've attended has to be beating Man Utd 1-0 at Celtic Park and being with my 2 brothers watching us beat Lazio 2-1 in Rome. Best away day experience? Has to be Munich with friends from Coatbridge...what a few days!
