Bernabei keen on move to Italy as Celtic look to sell £3.5m Argentinian

It looks like Brendan Rodgers has called time on Alexandro Bernabei’s Celtic career with the 24 year-old Argentinian left-back set to leave the club in the January transfer window after being deemed surplus to requirements by the Celtic manager.

Bernabei has had an 18 month stint in Glasgow after his £3.5m move from Lanus to the Scottish Champions but has failed to establish himself in the Celtic first team and has been used sparingly by Brendan Rodgers this season. Indeed his brief appearance at the weekend from the bench seems to be more to do with an ill-fated plan hatched at Lennoxtown to give as many squad players as possible some December game-time ahead of the transfer window opening.

It has been a costly plan in terms of points dropped with the draw against Motherwell and the defeats to Kilmarnock and Hearts opening the door for a title challenge across the city.

David Friel, formerly of The Celtic View, reporting in Scottish Sun last night, writes that there are clubs in Italy and back home in Argentina keen on signing Bernabei and he notes that the player has an Italian passport and is perhaps keen on a move there to continue his European journey in football.

Celtic are targeting Benfica academy graduate Tiago Araujo, now playing for Estoril and it looks like a £4million for the left wing-back is going to be partly funded by whatever Celtic can recoup from the £3.5m paid to bring Bernabei to the club.

  1. No club is paying money for him, a loan maybe with a view to buy, we will do well to get £1 million back for him.
