Reo Hatate Seeks Celtic Exit After Reduced Role Under O’Neill

Reo Hatate has informed Celtic that he wants to leave this summer after falling out of favour under Martin O’Neill last season.

Reo Hatate has told Celtic he wants to leave the club during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to FootballTransfers. The report, which says the request was confirmed by The Herald, follows a campaign in which his role diminished after Christmas.

The 28-year-old made 47 appearances across all competitions for O’Neill’s side last term, but started only seven of Celtic’s 21 league matches after Christmas. He is now eager to explore a move, with no formal offer reported despite interest from several clubs across world football.

From Postecoglou Signing to an Uncertain Future

Hatate joined Celtic from Kawasaki Frontale in January 2022 for €1.53 million and was among the first signings of the Ange Postecoglou era. During four and a half years in Glasgow, he helped Celtic win nine trophies.

His record of 33 goals in 189 appearances underlines his contribution to the club. However, he was not selected for Japan’s 2026 World Cup squad, and reports state that he believes a transfer would be the best outcome for all parties.

Hatate has two years remaining on his current contract. That leaves Celtic with a decision to make should interest develop into a formal proposal during the summer window.

What the Summer Could Hold

Celtic are expected to reshape their squad during the transfer window. Several loan players have returned to their parent clubs, while Hatate has been heavily linked with a permanent exit alongside other members of the squad.

FootballTransfers lists Hatate’s current estimated transfer value at €10.4 million, with a stated range of €9.4 million to €11.5 million. Any eventual sale would therefore be measured against both that estimate and the €1.53 million Celtic paid to sign him.

Hatate has reportedly asked to leave, and FootballTransfers reports that he has yet to receive a formal offer despite interest from several clubs.
