Billy McNeill statue appeal hits £70,000 target as Bellshill gets ready to honour “one of our most successful sons”

In just over a year the grassroots led effort to erect a statue in Bellshill to the late great Cetlic captain Billy McNeill has surpassed its fundraising goal of £70,000.

The Billy McNeill Commemoration Committee has thanked everyone who has contributed in some way big or small. “What an achievement! We now look forward to the day when Bellshill honours one of our most successful sons.”

Bellshill Bhoy, a well-known member of Celtic Noise has been keeping us up to date with the fund raising efforts and yesterday was able to tell us the great news that the £70k target had now been reached.

“Great news the £70k needed to erect the statue has been met, the committee will move to the 2nd phase to commission the statue, it is planned to be unveiled May 2021 for the 54th Anniversary of his historic lifting of the European Cup, thanks to all the Bhoys and ghirles who contributed, however large or small to help get this done.
The draw for the Celtic opus book was won by Martin McMahon, ex-committee member of the Mossend Emerald CSC and RE/teacher at Taylor high school New Stevenston.”
