Blow for Celtic as £3m bid for former star rejected – for now

Although it’s rare to see players go back to a former club and actually be a success, the performances from Fraser Forster this season have shown it’s not always the case.

Patrick Roberts made almost 80 Celtic appearances over three loan spells a few seasons ago, and he was an exciting player who’s fondly remembered by the fans.

HITC have reported on Celtic’s attempt to sign him on a permanent deal from Man City, but it looks like bad news for now.

They suggest that Celtic have made an offer of £3m to City, but they are looking to extend his contract to see if he develops further.

It’s hard to see him getting anywhere near the first time in Manchester, so it looks like a cynical attempt to keep him tied down in the hope he impresses on loan and commands a higher fee.

The report does go on to say that Celtic have left that offer on the table for now, in the hope that City change their mind and decide to cash in.

Since his time in Glasgow he’s had mixed loan spells with Girona, Norwich and Middlesbrough, and it’s clear his best spell came at Celtic Park.

It’s not clear what the player wants to do at this point, but it does feel like a return to Scotland could be the best thing for his career.
