Carter-Vickers forced to finish match despite suffering with an injury

Brendan Rodgers provided an update on Celtic’s mounting injury issues following the 2-1 victory over SK Sturm Graz last night, revealing that Cameron Carter-Vickers was experiencing discomfort towards the end of the game…

The defender appeared to be in some pain as he left the pitch after the final whistle, raising concerns of an additional blow for Rodgers, who had already been forced to withdraw Alistair Johnston and Kelechi Iheanacho during the first half due to injuries.

Carter-Vickers battled through the pain barrier in the final moments of the Europa League clash, standing firm as Celtic defended their advantage against some pressure from the Austrian champions.

CCV’s determination to stay on and finish the game was clear, though Rodgers explained that a substitution wasn’t possible since they had already made three in-game substitutions.

Rodgers acknowledged the challenge of the situation, especially with a demanding run of fixtures leading into Sunday’s top of the table clash at Tynecastle.

The Celtic boss expressed a mix of satisfaction at the result and disappointment that he couldn’t spare one of his key defenders who was clearly struggling physically.

Speaking via TNT Sports, Rodgers said: “Well our problem was in the second half we could only make one substitution. So obviously Cam was struggling towards the end but we couldn’t get him off because we’d already made the subs. Obviously you’ve got only three moments to make the subs in the game.”

With the visit to Hearts coming this Sunday, Celtic’s medical team will be working swiftly to evaluate Carter-Vickers’ availability. Rodgers will be hoping for encouraging updates, knowing how vital both the upcoming fixture and the defender’s influence are to his team. It is expected the Celtic manager will do his press conference as normal this afternoon, so we should get an update today.

Although the injury concerns linger, Rodgers commended his players for their composure and determination to come from behind and get their first win in Europe this season.

Celtic are back in action in the Europa League in two weeks time when they will face table-toppers Midtjylland in Denmark.
