Celtic 3-1 Glasgow City – With That Green Wall, Good Things Can Happen

You can’t go wrong if you wear the green and white these days, can you? What a wonderful performance from Fran Alonso’s Ghirls in Green and how lovely to see all these happy smiling faces, mainly young ones, in the biggest ever crowd (9553) at a Scottish Women’s game in club football (Hibs held the previous record of just over seven thousand for a match against Hearts at Easter Road last season).

And yet at half-time, it didn’t look any too good at all, did it? But our Ghirls buckled to the task, and playing with as much passion as skill, they carried off a great victory and we had the joyous sight of Fran Alonso and the merry girls doing Kyogos at the end. All thanks to goals from the ‘Goal Machine’ Natasha Flint, Irish defender Claire O’Riordan and recent signing Kit Loferski.

Full marks to captain Kelly Clark (her father used to keep wicket for Arbroath Cricket Club, by the way – did you know that?) who made a tremendous difference when she came on at half time, and to Natasha Flint, the player of the match, whose hunger for the game was a sight to behold! But I was also impressed by Caitlin Hayes and Amy Gallacher whose genetic inheritance in Celtic terms literally cannot be bettered – her great grandfather was the legendary (a word I don’t use often, but it is true here) Patsy Gallacher of the 1910s and the 1920s.

So where are we now? Well, we are still in with a shout, and all we can do is win both our games and hope for the best. We may be in the bizarre position of wanting theRangers to beat Glasgow City in the last game, on the grounds that we have a currently better goal difference than they do (+4), but Sunday’s gamed come first.

And then after that we have the Scottish Cup final against theRangers at Hampden at the end of the month! Hopefully the Green Brigade and The Bhoys will now have that one in their diaries and will bring their outstanding Green Wall to the season finale at Hampden.  It is all to play for. Congratulations to Celtic, and this game has done a great deal for the cause of women’s football in Scotland and also at Celtic.

But finally, and I am aware that I am getting boring about this, can we NOW have all home games played at Celtic Park? It is the greatest ground on earth, and the ghirls clearly relished the privilege of playing at our home. That crowd can easily be doubled, but it won’t be at that soulless ground in Airdrie.

Celtic play Hibs away on Sunday and with a win in that one will go into the last home game of the season against Hearts knowing that they will be in with a chance of winning the title. There are two Champions League spots available and if Celtic win both these matches against the Edinburgh sides then Fran Alonso’s side will claim one of them. The other one will be decided in the other game between the current Champions (theRangers) and the current league leaders (Glasgow City).

Assuming they have both won their penultimate matches this Sunday, that would mean that in that match an away win for Glasgow City would make them Champions by two points from runners up Celtic who would be three points ahead of third placed theRangers who would therefore miss out on European football.

A draw would mean that Celtic and City would be level on points but Celtic would almost certainly have the edge on goal difference so would be Champions, City runners up and theRangers again not making the Champions League.

A win for theRangers would mean that they finish on level points but with Sunday’s goal difference still to factor in (Celtic are +4 at the moment), Celtic are likely but not guaranteed to be top, with them making the Champions League and Glasgow City finishing third with nothing.

To win the league theRangers need to hope Celtic drop something in these last two games or outscore Celtic in these two matches away to Hearts and at home to title chasing Glasgow City.

If Celtic win on Sunday Michael Nicholson – who was at the match last night – should be thinking about moving the Hearts game from  Airdrie to Celtic Park because it’s already got shades of Love Street 1986 about it.

And with that Green Wall behind the team good things can happen!
