The 24-year-old operated on the right wing rather than his customary central role yet still made a decisive impact with a brave headed finish in the second half. Nygren’s winner made sure that Celtic overturned Sturm Graz’s lead in the game to secure an important victory for the Scottish champions.

Post-match Nygren acknowledged he was operating outside his usual position but emphasised his willingness to do whatever it takes to help the team succeed – a mentality that has swiftly earned him Brendan Rodgers’ trust.

Speaking after the match in the mixed-zone at Celtic Park, Nygren said: “I played a little bit out of position today. I tried to do as best as I can — of course I can play on the side, but I think other positions suit me better as a player. Wherever I am on the pitch, I always do my best and try to do as good as possible for the team to win.”

Brendan Rodgers was also full of praise for the Swede: “We’ve seen all of that tonight,” he said. “It was a really pleasing performance, and I’m so happy for the likes of Benji because he had so many chances and he’s playing out of position, really, but he gets into the areas to get those opportunities and showed so much courage to keep going and eventually gets his goal.”

The Celtic boss also singled out Arne Engels for his impressive display. Rodgers said: “Arne Engels, I thought, was outstanding in the game, coming back in, gave us that energy and that fight, and his set-piece quality is really world-class, the level and speed at which he delivers. Overall, it was really pleasing.”
