Celtic can leapfrog Champions before Scottish Cup showdown with the Rangers

Celtic’s win over Spartans this afternoon coupled with theRangers beating Glasgow City means that Celtic can move ahead of the current Champions with a win in midweek over the side that Fran Alonso’s team defeated so comfortab ly in the League Cup Final in December.

Glasgow City are a team that have had it pretty much all their own way in the Scottish Women’s game for a long, long time, yet even their most ardent supporter would have to admit that the challenge that is now coming from both Celtic and theRangers is bringing an end their period of pretty much total domination.

If Celtic beat Glasgow City on Thursday evening they will have lost to both of their new rivals in the space of five days and will drop to third in the SWPL. That will also set us up very nicely for the Scottish Cup match next Sunday where Celtic are at home to theRangers, high flyers in the league this season but with a poor record against Fran Alonso side.

Here’s Fran Alonso’s post match comments after today’s 2-0 win over Spartans and his attention now is very much focused on the game on Thursday night against the current Champions. Alonso, incidentally gives a positive update on today’s injured players Charlie Wellings and Olivia Chance being ready to play against City. They’ll be needed.

Match photos from today also included along with the SWPL table where it is getting tight at the top…
