Celtic Captain pays tribute to ex-teammate after penalty heroics

Callum McGregor has saluted former Celtic teammate and Invincible, Craig Gordon. Gordon, who has been excellent this season for Hearts and Scotland made a crucial penalty save in last night’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova.

The goalkeeper doesn’t have a great record for saving penalties himself, as referenced from his time at Celtic Park. However, last night the former Bhoys hero became a national hero when he made a diving save to his right-hand side to deny Moldova a way back into the game, in what would have surely been a tense last 10-15 minutes if the Moldovan’s had pulled a goal back from the spot.

McGregor joked that the evergreen Gordon is like J.M. Barrie’s famous character, Peter Pan. Speaking to PLZ Soccer, McGregor noted that “He’s like Peter Pan – he never gets old!”. The goalkeeper certainly looks in great form and has solidified himself as one of the top shot-stoppers in Scottish football even at the age of 39. Gordon also went through hell, after a series of injuries hampered his playing career some years ago now.

Celtic were the team that took a chance on him way back in 2014, under new Norwegian manager, Ronny Deila. After the loss of Fraser Forster the first time around to Southampton, the worry was rife about who the club would seek to replace the giant standing in the Paradise goal after some memorable seasons and big saves. However, Craig Gordon proved to be an astute piece of business on the behalf of the club and their scouting department. Craig fitted like a glove (pardon the pun) at Celtic, going on to become a stalwart of Celtic sides for years. His save last night is one of many crucial stops that have kept the teams he has played for on course for success.

Have a look at what our captain, Callum McGregor’s had to say about Craig after his heroics…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
