Celtic chiefs are preparing for star to leave Parkhead this Summer

As much as it hurts for fans to see a great player leave the club, it’s never a good idea to force someone to stay when they want to go.

Their form always suffers and it means they end up leaving for a smaller fee in the future, so the smart thing to do is take the money and move on.

In fairness, Celtic have always done a good job of deciding when to let players go – it’s much better to have that feeling that they could’ve stayed one more year over waiting too long and letting resentment build.

Football Insider have reported on the latest with Kristoffer Ajer, and it sounds like Celtic are now preparing to let him go this Summer.

They claim that a source inside Celtic has claimed there’s a growing expectancy that he won’t be at Celtic Park next season, after rejecting a new contract and his agent making noises about moving him on this Summer.

He’s still got a couple of years left on his contract so Celtic do have some leverage here, so it will be interesting to see how much they can get for him.

Ajer in action

He’s got the makings of a top class modern centre back, especially with his ability on the ball. He does need to improve his concentration and would benefit from being more dominant, but that will come with age and experience.

Ordinarily Celtic should push for at least the £25m that The BBC reported Arsenal paid for Kieran Tierney, but we don’t know how much the transfer market will be affected right now.

Obviously it would be better if he signed a new contract and stayed, but if that can’t be done then taking the money and finding a replacement is the sensible thing to do.
