Celtic could land highly rated Atletico Madrid youngster due to a reduced B team schedule in Spain

While we’re starting to see most of the big leagues return to some kind of normal, it’s expected that reserve team football will take a bit more time.

A report from Sportwitness has looked at the situation in Spain just now where a lot of B teams play in the lower divisions, so there could be some issues for the younger players getting game time.

They quote reports from Spain which say the leagues are to be restructured, but it’s also more likely that there will be shut down if the Covid-19 crisis gets worse.

This means that a few players could be available, and Celtic’s interest in Atletico Madrid youngster Rodrigo Riquelme has resurfaced.

He’s a name that’s popped up a lot in recent months, but the report claims that Celtic have actually made an approach to Atletico to sign him, and he’s not expected to cost too much due to his contract running out next summer.

They also indicate that he’s unlikely to break into the senior set up so Atletico are open to letting him go, but Celtic would face competition from Ajax and some Serie A sides.

It’s not clear if Riquelme would be good enough to come in and immediately challenge for a place in the Celtic line up, but the likely departure of Tom Rogic does mean there’s space for a player like him.
