Celtic linked with Benfica defender

CELTIC have been linked with Benfica centre back Branimir Kalaica as the Scottish Champions look to strengthen their defence ahead of the 10IAR season. Following Jozo Simunovic’s departure, the club are needing another option and could look to the Croatian U21 internationalist.

The Daily Mail are reporting that Neil Lennon’s side are one of three named as being interested in the Croatian defender with Premier League hopefuls Leeds and top flight Watford both keeping tabs.

Kalaica began his career at Dinamo Zagreb and left the club in 2016 as a free contract, signing for the Portuguese side. The 22-year-old has featured primarily for Benfica B in the second division.

With 96 appearances to his name, only one has been in the first division with Benfica, scoring once. Celtic are short in the centre back department with Christopher Jullien and Kris Ajer the only recognised defenders. Nir Bitton, Hatem Abd Elhamed and Stephen Welsh can also play when needed but the club needs to strengthen their defence.

An additional central defender, ideally a left footed option, would allow for Neil Lennon to utilise a three at the back which the Irishman opted for after the winter break.
