Celtic linked with loan move for £20m rated Man United defender in January

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in thinking that a player has to be good because of their salary and the club they play for, but it’s very important not to fall into that trap with Phil Jones.

He didn’t quite live up to that moment where Alex Ferguson suggested he could go on to be Man United’s greatest ever player, and he just looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

He probably gets extra criticism because his face producing some truly outstanding expressions when he’s focussed on his defending, but he’s just not good enough for the top level.

A report from HITC has indicated that Celtic are looking at bringing him to the club on loan in January, but it’s hard to say he’s what the team needs just now.

They do point out that he’s on £100k a week and United wanted £20m to let him go so the move should be impossible, but there’s little interest from anyone in a permanent deal so they would consider loaning him out in January until the end of the season.

The problem from Celtic’s point of view is they need someone who’s calm and authoritive to transform the defence, while everything that Jones does is last ditch so you fear he would simply add to the chaos.

It would be amazing on so many different levels if Phil Jones came to Celtic and proved to be the catalyst that sparked the comeback to secure 10IAR, but it just seems totally impossible.
