Celtic make their move to tie up hugely promising striker in £300k deal before Spurs can act

It’s still expected that any major transfer business will need to wait until a new manager has been appointed, but Celtic are still looking to make some early moves in the English market.

The cross border rules allow Celtic to move before any English teams can to offer terms and the compensation tends to be much less for Scottish teams too, so it does look like Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph could join Liam Shaw as an early addition to next season’s squad.

A report from Football Insider has confirmed that Celtic have already made an offer to the young striker as they look to get him tied up, and it’s believed that a fee of around £300k will need to be paid if the deal goes through.

It’s particularly important for Celtic to get this deal tied up soon because it also sounds like Spurs want to bring him in, and it’s likely they can throw a much bigger salary at him even if he’s never going to be close to the first team.

Joseph has played a lot of games for Wigan this season so he’s clearly good enough to play at a senior level already, but it would be a major step up in quality and he’ll likely be seen as a developmental signing for now.

His best performance of the season so far came against Burton Albion in December when he bagged a hat trick in a crucial win, so hopefully Celtic can get this agreement tied up soon:

Clearly he’s not going to replace someone like Eddy straight away but he’s cheap and talented so he’s the type of signing that Celtic should be looking to make, although he could potentially benefit from a loan spell somewhere else next season if he does sign.
