Celtic may have to pay more but recent rumours suggest key target could be available again in the summer

It was a surprise to many when Liverpool decided to sign Preston defender Ben Davies late in the transfer window, and the early signs suggest he was a panic signing of the highest order.

He was brought in before they signed Ozan Kabak so perhaps he was expected to play, but he’s yet to be involved and it’s not even clear if Liverpool actually want him.

A recent report from The Mirror has indicated that Liverpool were eyeing Torino centre back Bremer as their main target in the summer, so that immediately suggests that Ben Davies won’t be needed.

Goal did report that Ozan Kabak is only on loan with an option to buy so perhaps Bremer would act as a replacement for him, but it’s also believed that Jurgen Klopp is a giant fan of Kabak so it looks like that option will be taken up.

If they do make a signing and everyone returns to fitness then Davies will find himself as 5th or 6th choice in the squad, so he could even find it difficult to be registered to play in the Premier League so it looks like a strange transfer.

There was a report from Sky Sports before he moved to Liverpool which stated that Celtic had an agreement with Davies for him to join in the summer, so clearly there’s interest from the club.

Obviously Liverpool aren’t going to give him away for free so Celtic would have to pay something if he became available, but he still looks like a viable transfer target going into the summer.

He does look like he would be a solid signing as he’s a good all round defender who has a bit of pace and he’s comfortable on the ball too, so it’s also possible that Liverpool saw him as an investment-type signing so they could flip him fairly quickly.

Ultimately it’s easy to see a situation where Celtic could loan him and then Liverpool would try to sell him to the highest bidder on his return, but if he was a major target for the summer then it’s still worth lodging an enquiry when the season ends.
