The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 15 September…
SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 1906
Tommy Sinclair, the Rangers goalkeeper on loan to Celtic has still not conceded a goal since the start of the season! Nor did he ever look likely to do so today as Celtic beat Hearts 3-0. It was Davie Hamilton who scored two today, and almost inevitably, Jimmy Quinn scored the other.
WEDNESDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 1937
Often the sign of a good team is whether they can bounce back from a defeat, and Celtic do just that today. Defeated by Rangers on Saturday, tonight they bounce back with a 3-2 win over Morton at Cappielow with two goals from Willie Buchan and one from Frank Murphy.
SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 1951
Forfar Athletic put up a brave fight against Celtic in the League Cup quarter final first leg at Parkhead and their one consolation goal is greeted with a cheer, but Bertie Peacock, Bobby Collins, Jimmy Walsh and Joe Baillie score for Celtic to make it 4-1 and the second leg is now a formality.
WEDNESDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 1965
Celtic turn on a magnificent display of scintillating football to defeat Raith Rovers 8-1 in the first leg of the quarter-final of the Scottish League Cup, a performance still talked about locally to this day. Joe McBride and John Hughes each score hat-tricks and Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone the other two goals. Bobby Evans is playing for Raith Rovers, but has no answer to this devastation.
WEDNESDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 1982
56,229 fans at Parkhead are entertained but ultimately disappointed as the first round first leg game in the European Cup between Celtic and Ajax finishes in a 2-2 draw. All the goals come in the first half hour with Celtic’s goal scorers being Charlie Nicholas (with a penalty) and Frank McGarvey. Celtic are denied another penalty when Tommy Burns is barged off the ball in the second half.
