Celtic On This Day – 7th September – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

The late, great Celtic Historian David Potter’s Celtic diary highlights key Celtic-related events relevant to each day, today covering 7 September…

SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1895

Celtic have a fine 4-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox in the Scottish League with two goals from Tommy Dunbar and one each from Barney Crossan and Willie Ferguson. This is a great fightback for Celtic were two goals down shortly after half time, and the Celtic fans in the 18,000 crowd are delighted.

SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1918

Ex-Sunderland man Willie Cringan is the scorer of the only goal of the game as Celtic beat Ayr United 1-0 before a crowd of 10,000 with a considerable amount of war wounded soldiers in their “hospital blue” uniform watching the game, and there is a row of the blinded in front of the Grant Stand who are being informed of the progress of the game by a volunteer.

SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1935

Celtic’s good start to the season continues with a 3-1 win over Queen of the South at Palmerston Park today to the delight of the many travelling supporters. Jimmy McGrory, Jimmy Delaney and Chick Geatons score the goals.

SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1963

Ibrox is a strange and sad sight today with a thinly populated Celtic End passing its own comment on the last three Rangers games which have all been 0-3 defeats. The atmosphere was as if Rangers were playing someone like Dundee or Kilmarnock. But Celtic score first through Steve Chalmers, and then the same player hit the post just before half time, before the almost inevitable and predictable collapse in the second half as Rangers win 2-1. Why is Mr Kelly so unaware of what is going on?

WEDNESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 1988

Losing 0-1 away to the Hungarian side Honved in the first Leg of a European Cup tie does not seem to be the biggest disaster in the world, but given some recent results (losing 1-5 to Rangers in the League and going out of the Scottish League Cup to Dundee United at Tannadice), there is now serious cause for concern at Celtic Park.
