Celtic release stern statement after unprecedented SPFL move

Celtic have released a strongly worded statement in the wake of the SPFL sanctions against the club. In an unprecedented move, the league confirmed that there would be a 500 ticket deduction from the next Celtic appearance at Hampden in the League Cup due to pyrotechnics before kickoff in December’s win over Rangers.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were taken to a penalty shootout to put their city rivals to the sword in a memorable meeting but the league have confirmed that there would be sanctions for the delayed kickoff.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Celtic took aim at those that continue to use pyrotechnics and highlighted that their continued use is now encroaching on other supporters.

“Celtic Football Club notes today’s SPFL judgement relating to the use of pyrotechnics at matches. Clearly, it is hugely disappointing that our wider support will be negatively affected at future SPFL League Cup matches at Hampden following the actions of a small minority.

“It is well known that we also currently face a UEFA suspended sentence as a result of the previous use of pyrotechnics, most recently at the match against Borussia Dortmund, by a small minority of supporters – something which could potentially have a negative and damaging impact on the team and Celtic supporters wishing to attend an away match in UEFA competition to support the team.

“The Club has been very clear that the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics at matches is illegal, and presents risks to supporter safety and to the Club under the applicable regulations.

“The fact that the use of pyrotechnics by a small minority is now adversely affecting the attendance of our supporters at matches should act as a very serious wake-up call to those involved.”

It was a strong statement from Celtic and one that you would hope will not fall on deaf ears. There have been calls for footballing authorities to embrace fan culture but until that time, these sanctions will continue. It remains to be seen how the club navigate the ticketing sanction and whether the average supporter is impacted; although, one thing is clear and thats is that no one wants to be missing out on the game.
