Celtic set to miss out on windfall this summer as former star struggles with new club

Moussa Dembele looked like he would be a key addition for Atletico Madrid as they look to secure the La Liga title, but it’s quickly turning into a nightmare as he’s getting nowhere near the team.

It’s a strange one because Diego Simeone was initially delighted to get the deal done, but Mundo Deportivo have since reported that he’s getting nowhere near the team just now.

He’s played a grand total of 16 minutes in La Liga and he was always in a situation where he had to work his way into the team, but he’s not even getting off the bench just now even when Atleti need a goal.

The report confirms that there is an option to buy him for €33.5m at the end of the season, but it’s impossible to see that being exercised just now.

This does still affect Celtic as they were due 10% of that fee if the permanent move did go through, and that’s a decent amount that could pay for a starting quality player in the transfer market just now.

Of course he could still be sold on in the summer but this spell in Spain will surely hurt his market value, so it’s a situation where nobody is really benefitting just now.

Simeone has shown with Thomas Lemar that players can go from outcast to a regular starter if they work hard and take their chance when it comes, but it does look like the stay in Madrid will be short for the former Celtic star.
